A good lawyer can be difficult to find. I highly recommend you rely as much as possible on word of mouth referrals from anyone you know who has gone through family court. Meet with them before you commit, and trust your gut as to how you feel about working with them.

Remember that your legal representative will support you (to varying degrees), but ultimately it is your own journey.

A good friend of mine who is currently on this journey said to me, “I’ve been looking to lawyers for guidance, but in reality they know only a few hours of your life”.

It is up to you to present the relevant information and be clear about what is important and what isn’t. There are many options available for your legal help, but essentially you want a lawyer that you can communicate with comfortably, and who demonstrates understanding of your situation. If you don’t have any personal recommendations for a lawyer, you can contact the law society in your state who will put you in touch with a family lawyer in your area.
